Greetings Parents and Students:
I am writing this from the high school gym where many juniors are finishing up the PSAT. I was happy to see so many of our students take advantage of this opportunity to “practice” for college entrance exams. Results will be available online and hard copies in December. I will have a lunch time meeting to explain how to make sense of the test scores and how to use that info to prepare for SATs.
Here’s What Else is Happening for Juniors:
Junior Presentations:I have seen all US History classes and presented information on college and career readiness. I am still planning to see the AP US History class and have make ups for students who missed the presentation. I will also be putting the power point on the web.
Junior Meetings: One-on-one Student meetings will be happening during the months of October and November. We will focus on individualized college/career plans. Students will leave with their updated Junior Personalized Learning Plan and an individualized to do list. Be sure to share with parents.
Nov. 7 Cabrillo College and Career Night. This annual event is held at Cabrillo College, Monday November 7, from 6-8, in the gym, library, and cafeteria. This is a great opportunity for students to explore their potential post-high school options. I have included the link to the event for your convenience and highly recommend students and parents attend this free event.
Nov. 9. Miss Representation Film Screening. SLVHS Cougar Parents Club is pleased to present the award-winning film Miss Representation. Free tickets are available here: slvmissrep.eventbrite.com Students may receive extra credit in some classes. Donations appreciated. This film explores the idea that the media teaches girls and young women that value lies in their youth, beauty, and sexuality and not in their capacity as leaders. Miss Representation explores how mainstream media and culture can contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
Nov. 11 Veterans Day. No School.
Nov. 14 Career Expo: We will have career representatives from 18 different companies or professions here to meet with students during their social studies classes. Students will prepare questions and have an opportunity to talk with local business leaders about their careers and opportunities in their fields.
From Cougar Parents Club. Please read the attached letter from our Cougar Parents Club for more information regarding the great work they do for our students and how they are looking to you all for support in their efforts.
That’s all for now. Hang in there juniors ( and junior parents)…
