It’s going to be hot the next few days and into next week. We have several rooms available for teachers who are upstairs or in hotter rooms to move into cooler conditions. Thanks to all the teachers who have graciously volunteered their rooms on their prep time to make sure our students are in the most comfortable situations we can provide. Our PE teachers will be making sure we don’t overheat the students, and we are working to move the start times of Saturday’s football games to earlier in the morning to avoid the afternoon heat. Students should bring water bottles to school if they can. We have a bottle fill-up station in the gym foyer. Stay hydrated and stay out of the sun whenever you can.
Tomorrow morning is Senior Sunrise. SLV High School seniors traditionally gather on the first Friday of the year to watch the sunrise over the football field as a symbolic beginning to their senior year of high school. We follow up with a Senior Sunset in June.
Tomorrow, Felton has first light at 6:13 and sunrise at 6:39 am. We will have bagels, donuts, fruit, and juice for our seniors, from 6:15 am until 7:15 am. We look forward to seeing our seniors tomorrow morning.
Schedule Changes will begin next Tuesday
The good news is that more people are bringing their kids to SLV High School. The flip side of that is we have many classes, most of them freshmen classes, that have class sizes as high as 39. Those kind of numbers are not good for the students, the teachers, or the learning. We have been working with the district office to add some classes to our schedule to alleviate these problems. The final plan was approved yesterday and the counselors and administration will be working today and tomorrow morning to change about 75 schedules. Roughly 50 of those will be freshmen schedules, though there will be schedule changes for older students as well, due to shared courses such as Biology, Spanish 1, and electives. We will also be collapsing a small Spanish 3 course and distributing those students to other sections of Spanish 3.
While we make these changes during the next 48 hours, Powerschool access will not be available. The plan is to pass out new schedules to students with changes tomorrow (Friday) during 4th period.
All of these schedule changes will be made by moving the students whose schedules can be changed, beginning with those that cause the least disruption to their overall schedules. Once we make the changes, any new classes will begin on Tuesday, and we will not be changing schedules back. We will not be taking requests to move back to a teacher you no longer have or to a period that you like better. This is not because we are mean. It’s because this process takes dozens of hours to figure out who can be moved, where they can move, and how we can best even out the class sizes. Our schedule is a very tight fit right now and the vast majority of students can’t be moved. Please know that these moves are being made in the interest of the whole school and will create better classroom environments for all of our students, even the ones who may be unhappy with their individual changes.
If you receive a new schedule that has an error in it – meaning something like two math classes or a blank period, please see your counselor.
Again, these will be the only types of adjustments we will make to the new schedules.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and your patience in a difficult process.
