NO SCHOOL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3
LABOR DAY HOLIDAY
Principal’s Message from Jeff Calden
A quick reminder that there is no school on Monday. Happy Labor Day.
I spent a lot of time in our classrooms this week and I got to see some pretty cool stuff. I saw high-quality discussions, students being assessed for skills to get a read on where they are, a citizenship pre-test that was quite difficult, science safety quizzes and experiments, kids working together to solve problems and mysteries, learning to speak a new language, writing about themselves, their lives, and where they want to be in the future, and students working to become physically fit. I saw students working hard after school in the theater, in the pool, on the field, on the courts and in the classroom. I saw a lot of math – some I could do and some I can’t – and I saw so many teachers working hard to help students understand that “I don’t know” is just a temporary answer until you do. There is so much positive happening around here. I am proud to be here and feel lucky that my child has the opportunity to learn in these classrooms.

After-School Math Program is Seeking Tutors
The daily after-school math program is seeking tutors to help students learn Math 1, 2, and 3 curriculum. Receive volunteer hours for valuable and give needed service for your fellow peers. It also looks great on resumes and college applications! If you are good at math or you want to become significantly better at math, please see Mr. Siegel in room H203.

Chromebook Loaner Policy
San Lorenzo Unified School District no longer gives daily loaners of chromebooks to students on a regular basis.
Students without a device instead may “check out” a device from the school district for the entire year.
Much like the textbooks students check out, they can go home with the student each night to be used for homework, and the student is responsible for returning the Chromebook at the end of the year.
Students who wish to check out a loaner Chromebook for the year may do so at the HS library.
SLVHS Attendance Policies
The beginning of the year is a good time to review existing and new attendance policies so that everyone is on the same page and there are no surprises! This stuff is never fun to talk about. We do not want your children to come to school when they are ill, but if they aren’t sick, they need to be here.
THE RULES: California Education Code recognizes only the following reasons as excused absences: personal illness; religious holidays; medical or dental services; serious family emergencies; and/or school suspension. All other absences will be recorded as unexcused. This also applies to tardies. Oversleeping and Traffic are not excused tardies. These are not our rules. We can’t bend them, change them, or ignore them.
CLEARING ABSENCES: There are two methods for clearing absences
Option One – Call the Attendance Line and Leave a Message
Please call the attendance line, preferably the day that your student is absent, at 335-4425 Extension 206. This phone line is available 24/7.
Please leave the following information when you call:
First and last name of the student
Date and period of the absence(s)
The specific reason for the absence
Phone number where the parent can be reached
If the absence is called in, the student will not need to get a re-admit slip to attend classes upon return.
Option Two – Send Your Student Back to School with a Note
You may also send your student back to school the day they return with a note that includes all information listed above. This method does require a bit more work on everyone’s part. You can download a parent note form at this link: Parent Absence Verification Form
Failure to clear absences will result in consequences including detention, loss of privileges (dances, sports contests) and possible in-school suspension.
An automated phone caller will notify parents/guardians nightly of any period absence for that current school day.
If you have any questions regarding any of these policies please contact Assistant Principal Danielle Winters at: email@example.com or 335-4425 ext. 202.
