Principal’s Message

from Jeff Calden

2020

The Class of 2020 will have TWO Graduation Events

We ARE having a LIVE Graduation Event on the Originally Scheduled Date!

When: Friday, June 5, 2020, starting at 10:00 am

What:  A graduation procession in cars (PLEASE, decorate the car if you’d like!)

Where: SLV Tri-Campus

Details: Seniors and their immediate families will drive onto the SLV Tri-Campus at the SLE entrance, and proceed to the back parking lot by the pool.  There, each graduate’s name will be announced and the graduates will be handed their diplomas. Then the cars will continue to drive up Overbeck Way, and exit through the middle school back road.  Teachers and Staff from Kindergarten to Senior year will be invited to line the road (ten feet apart with masks) and cheer for you as you leave school and head out into the real world.

This event will be broadcast LIVE on Boulder Creek Community Radio: www.KBCZ.org, KBCZ 90.1FM, which covers Boulder Creek and immediate surrounding areas, AND on its new sister station, KBCD at 89.3FM which covers Felton, Zayante, Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz.  This way, everyone can listen to the ceremony on their car radios or at home and cheer and scream and honk for every graduate as they are announced.

More details to come - but a few quick rules: one car per graduate and no RVs or limos because we are required to fit all cars on the tri-campus and not block up Hwy 9.  Also, nobody may get out of the car during the procession.  These were required pieces of the plan in order to have this event approved by Public Health and the Sheriff's Department.

We are ALSO Creating a Second Graduation Event to Commemorate this Group of Seniors

When: Beginning soon and lasting a few weeks

What: The creation of the Class of 2020 Graduation: The Movie

Where: SLV PAC

Details: Nearly every part of a regular graduation will be professionally filmed in our PAC, one piece at a time. National Anthem, Speeches, Musical Performances, one graduate at a time having their name read and walking across the stage, your professional photo taken holding your diploma, even somebody ringing the graduation bell.  All of these pieces will be edited together with sound, music, applause, and special effects, into a complete film that will be available to you online. Special Thanks to Kylan Thureockes for putting all of this together for us.

WE WILL FILM THE GRADUATES IN CAPS AND GOWNS IN THE PAC FROM MONDAY MAY 11TH THROUGH WEDNESDAY, MAY 13TH.

THERE IS A SIGN-UP SHEET ONLINE. EACH SENIOR SHOULD GO TO THE WEBSITE AND SECURE A DAY AND TIME TO COME AND BE FILMED.

YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR A SPOT AND SHOW UP AT THE CORRECT TIME TO BE FILMED.

Why all of this?

The plan is to have a live, fun, festive activity at school with graduates and immediate family together, but in cars! And it is the plan that when you leave the tri-campus that morning and head home to a graduation party, the film we created will be waiting for you online to download and watch.  We hope to create a day that nobody will forget and give this class that has lost out on many things, something no other class has ever had.  A car parade through school, a live radio broadcast, and a movie made about the graduation of the San Lorenzo Valley High School Class of 2020.

Why not a more traditional graduation ceremony?

We knew going in that anything bringing together hundreds of people on campus and in stands would be denied, no matter what kind of social distancing we did.  So, we did it with cars.  And we did it one person at a time being filmed in the PAC. And our plan was approved this week by the Santa Cruz County Health Department, the Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol.  Both law enforcement agencies have also offered to come to help out with our Parade on June 5th. Other high schools have put forward plans of a more traditional graduation - with plans to scale back and keep people separated - and they were all denied.

Important information to help guide your child through the AP Exam day experience:

AP Exam Day Checklist: Your child should complete this checklist for each AP Exam they'll be taking this year, and keep it next to them on test day.

Explainer Videos: New videos are available to give your child quick, easily accessible information about the test day experience and what they need to do to prepare. Additional videos will be posted to this playlist soon.  Click Here to Access Videos

AP Art Students: Your Digital Art Submissions are due on Monday, May 11th.

Mrs. Thompson will then review them for you to make sure they are ready to be assessed.

AP Computer Science Students: Your Computer Performance Task must be turned into the AP Digital Portfolio by May 26th at 8:59 pm.

AP Exam Demo: On May 4, your child will be able to practice submissions through the exam demo, which will give a click-through practice for the different ways to submit responses to this year's AP Exams. We encourage all students to take this important preparation step. This will help your child avoid technical difficulties on the day of the exam. The demo will be generic across subjects, and not a practice exam. See below for info on a specific video and demo for world languages exams.

AP Prep Week: Next week, the online AP Classes and Review Sessions will focus on the exam day experience and sample exam questions.

Two Days Before Exams: Your child will receive an email with their exam e-ticket 48 hours before their exam. Be sure to help your child check what time their exams will start in your time zone.

Information for AP World Languages Exams

A video specifically about the test-taking experience for AP French and AP Spanish exams will be available the week of May 4.

The world languages exams will be administered using a new dedicated app—the AP World Languages Exam App (WLEA). Students taking these exams must use this app on smartphones or tablets, not on laptops or desktop computers. This free app will be available for download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store the week of May 11. We'll email students and their teachers to let them know when the app is available to download. Visit our site for more details.  Accommodations details for the above exams are also available now.

If you're unsure whether your child can access the app, or if your child doesn't have a device, you can fill out this survey as soon as possible so we can help support your child.

On Friday, April 17, 2020, SLVUSD and the SLV Foundation for Education launched SLV Food for Families to help families in SLV feed their children.

In one week the SLV Food for Families campaign raised over $14,000.00. This money will go to purchase grocery gift cards (as funds are available) for families currently on the SLVUSD Free & Reduced Lunch Pro

Who is Eligible to Receive Food Cards?

Any student who is enrolled in the SLVUSD Free/Reduced Lunch Program is eligible.  Families who are currently enrolled and are struggling to purchase food for their family may pick up a Safeway Card at the following Location:

Quail Hollow Campus,

325 Marion, Ave. Ben Lomond. Ca.

Friday, April 24, 2020 from 1:00pm to 3:00pm

How You Can Help?

If you are currently employed, please consider helping the families in SLV feed their children. This is a disturbing time for all of us, but for those who are struggling to feed their children, it is terrifying.

Please help us take care of our kids and our families for a better tomorrow for all of us.

If your company or business participates in matching donation programs, please consider supporting SLV Food for Families. Every penny of this money will go to SLVUSD families who are struggling.
