Principal’s Message

from Jeff Calden

Thank You

I would like to thank everyone!  Seriously, EVERYONE!  This has been an incredibly different and difficult year for all of us, and I am so proud to have been able to go through it with this group of students, this staff, and this community.  There is something to be said for a group of people who just shake their heads at the craziness and then roll up their sleeves and get to work.  That is who we are. It is much appreciated and it is the reason we were able to end the year with such a joyous celebration on Friday. While it may not have been traditional in any sense, I don't think I have ever enjoyed a Graduation Ceremony as much as this one.  I have included some very nice pictures from SLV Steve at the bottom of this email.

I am putting them at the end because there are still things in this newsletter that YOU NEED TO READ.

Today's Newsletter is FULL of Information regarding things such as:

Yearbooks, AP Summer Assignments, Senior Google Accounts, Diploma Covers, Final Grades, and Work Permits.

Please take the time to make sure you are informed and don't miss anything.

Have a safe and wonderful Summer!

Senior Class School Google Accounts Will be Closed - Here's the Info You Need to Keep Your Stuff
Senior class school Google accounts are available to you through the summer. They will be suspended when the new school year begins.
It is important for you to take some time this summer to get anything and everything you need off of your school email, drive, and any other place you have put information or documents you may need in the future.

There are two ways that Google provides for seniors to copy their content from their school account.

The best, no fuss way, involves creating another google account to transfer files to, and then going to takeout.google.com/transfer

Here's a help article from Google that explains it:
If you're using this method, remember that free Google accounts have a 15 GB limit. Make sure you have less than that in your school account. You can check this by going to your Google Drive and looking at the bottom of the left hand column, it'll tell you your storage amount there.

The other way is to download all your files onto a computer (not a chromebook) and then they're available to do whatever you wish. This way you'd go to takeout.google.com/settings/takeout
Here's a help article from Google that explains this method:

final grades
Information on Final Grades for Semester Two
Grades will be calculated and entered a bit differently than normal this semester for obvious reasons. Below are the main pieces students and parents need to know. Students currently have two grades in each class: The grade that was frozen when we left live school and an overall grade for the entire semester. In the spirit of hold harmless, teachers will take each of these grades and award the student the higher grade of the two. For example - if you had a C when you left, and you now have a B, your final grade is a B. If you had a B when you left and you now have a C, your final grade is a B.  Students who end up with final grades of D will instead be given a P for Pass this semester only. Students who had an F when we left and still have an F will be given a grade of INC for incomplete to give those students a chance to improve the grade next week and through summer school. Incomplete grades not made up or improved by the start of next year will be changed to NM for No Mark and No Credit earned.

As a school, we felt that Ds and Fs this semester were not the right thing to do.  Some schools are going complete Pass/Fail. However, we also wanted to allow students who earned As, Bs, or Cs to keep those grades on their transcript.

work permit
Work Permit Information for Students
If  you are thinking of getting a summer job, here is what you need to do to get your work permit completed remotely during these upcoming summer months:
Step One: Apply for and be offered a Job. You'll need the work permit -after- this step and you must be at or above the age of 14 to work as a minor.  As for finding a place to work over the summer, this is going to be limited right now, but I recommend asking businesses that are open in your area to see if they are hiring students.
Step Two:  Print out, then fill out the attached form and have both a parent and employer sign it.
Step Three: You'll then need to scan (or take a photo) of this complete form and email to me ([email protected]) and I will complete the work permit and send you a file that you will need to print out and sign.
Step Four:  Then, you will scan/photograph  this final signed copy back to me for my records and bring the permit to your employer
Important: If you do not have access to a printer / scanner, you will need to visit either the Counseling Office or District Office depending on the following dates, please be sure to read the details.

Until June 25th - You will need to contact Jeannette Lange at [email protected] or call at 831-335-4721 ext. 216  to make arrangements to pick up/complete a paper work permit application at the SLVHS Counseling Office. Please be sure to contact Jeannette Lange before coming to the Counseling Office so that she can let you know the office hours, as they can change. Please note that the Counseling Office is closed on Fridays.

From June 29th - July 21st - You will need to contact Lisa Mansfield at [email protected] or call at 831 336-8852 to make arrangements to pick up/complete a paper work permit application at the SLV District Office (325 Marion Ave, Ben Lomond CA, 95005).  Please be sure to contact Lisa Mansfield before going to the District Office so that she can let you know the office hours, as they can change. SLV Bands and Choir Present the 2020 Virtual Performance of Ode to Joy

SLV Music teacher Carey Liston and all of our SLVUSD band and choir students from 5th to 12th grade worked very hard to keep alive the tradition of all district music students joining together at the end of the year to play Beethoven's Ode to Joy. Thanks so much, Carey for making this happen!
