Principal’s Message
from Jeff Calden
I hope everyone has a chance to relax and enjoy some time off next week during Spring Break.
When we return on April 12, school will still be the same as it is now for one more week.
After that, we will phase in our Hybrid and Online Only programs.
All the information I could think of about this change is below.
Also, I have fielded several questions about the Graduation Sign from last year still being on the Library wall.
We have been trying to take it off for months now. It seems that during the fires, the sign "melted" onto the glass.
We have now found a professional who is coming out to remove it over Spring Break. We hope to soon replace it with a sign for the Class of 2021.
If you have not entered your choice for Hybrid or Online Only into the online form - you will be getting a phone call today
Today we will be calling all families who have not yet put their choice of program into the online form.
There will be a live call during which you can just tell the person who calls what your choice is.
There may also be a robocall asking you to email me your choice.
If you know your choice and want to get it in now, put it in the online form or email me at [email protected]

As of this morning, we have had 77% of families respond. After today, I will take the lists and start to create the A/B groups.
At a certain point, I will have to just make the groups, which means those who have not chosen will have to go into the HYBRID program list.
It makes more sense to do it that way, because it is easy to change people from Hybrid to Online Only, but once the groups are made, adding to Hybrid can mess things up.
My explanation of the two programs is below.
Mr. Calden's Breakdown of Hybrid and Online Programs
Mondays will be similar to now, with asynchronous work posted for credit as Monday Specials.
Tuesday-Friday: ALL Students will attend their online classes in the morning as they do now. They will be shorter to account for more time in the afternoon.
Students in the Online Only Program will use the afternoons to complete asynchronous work posted on Schoology by their teachers.
Online Only Students will work at home on their own or with friends and family all four afternoons .
Students enrolled in the Hybrid Program will come to school two afternoons a week based on their placement in an A or B group.
Because we can only have half a class of students at once, students will be split into two groups, A and B. This will be done alphabetically by last name in order to keep siblings together.
Hybrid Students come to school twice a week in the afternoon and on the other two days, they will do the work posted on Schoology at home on their own or with friends and family.
Tuesdays will be LIVE time for the A Group's 1/3/5 classes and Wednesdays will be LIVE time for the A Group's 2/4/6 classes.
Thursdays will be LIVE time for the B Group's 1/3/5 classes and Fridays will be LIVE time for the B Group's 2/4/6 classes.
When Does Hybrid - Online Only Schedule Begin?
Beginning on Tuesday, April 20th - Freshmen Only will either come live in the afternoon for Hybrid or do the asynchronous work left for the afternoon in Online Only.
It is important to note that ALL STUDENTS will have school that week.
All Students: Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors will have their Online Classes in the morning on the new time schedule below.
Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are expected to attend after lunch sessions online with their teachers if requested to do so.
Nobody gets the Week Off!!!
Beginning on Tuesday, April 27th - All Students will either come live in the afternoon for Hybrid or do the asynchronous work left for the afternoon in Online Only.
Everyone will have their Online Classes in the morning on the new time schedule below.
Secondary Hybrid Schedule - Everyone no matter which choice of Program is ONLINE in the morning.
Hybrid Students come to school twice a week in the afternoon and work at home or with friends and family the other two days
Online Only Students work at home or with friends and family all four afternoons

SLVHS / SLVUSD GRAD NIGHT CLASS of 2021
Please Support 2021 Grad Night for our Seniors

Dear SLV Supporters,
We are writing on behalf of the 2021 Grad Night Committee, a volunteer group of parents of San Lorenzo Valley High School and Coast Redwood High seniors. For 36 years, parents have put on elaborate, creative Grad Night events that gave seniors a memorable, safe, sober and fun environment the night after graduation.
This is normally funded by in-person events throughout senior year, but 2020-21 has been unique: COVID prevented in-person fundraisers. Fire damage and evacuations reduced the number of families with time, funds and energy to donate and plan. Our generous local businesses have been hit hard. We have done virtual fundraisers (mask and T-shirt sales, Wild Roots community day, Valentine’s baskets) but can’t do the spring Wine and Chocolate event that usually raises about half of Grad Night funds. Instead, we are reaching out with this request to see what kind of event we can put together with a final fundraising effort of direct donations. The class of 2021 missed out on a year and a half of high school traditions. They endured a pandemic, fire, evacuations, and shutdowns yet they are SLV Strong, we know we can still send our seniors off with hope and joy!
WHAT GRAD NIGHT 2021 MIGHT LOOK LIKE (with masks and safe distancing)
We cannot do the traditional inside event of years past, so we are exploring ways to host an outside event. Trying to hold on to some tradition the actual event is a secret, but with the recent changes in the county tiers two exciting guaranteed events have been presented to us, it will be a steep fundraising ladder to climb though. A fun outdoor event on the school campus or a nearby camp is also being explored. Another option, if funding prevents a big event, would be a drive-through celebration at the school similar to last years.
CURRENT FUND STATUS: With seed funds that the Class of 2020 left us, along with the fundraising we have done so far, we are still $11,000 short of our goal and the ultimate experience for our departing Seniors . We are hopeful that our Valley community can work some amazing magic.
OUR BIG REQUEST – TAX-DEDUCTIBLE DIRECT DONATIONS NOW: We know it is a hard year, but if you can, head to our website this week (www.slvgradnight.com) to donate. If it is more convenient, you can also mail your donation to (P.O. Box 44, Felton CA. 95018). Then we can shift from fundraising to planning, knowing what we can afford. No amount is too small. Our hope is that those who cannot donate will share this letter with friends or family who can.
Visit our online store: Limited edition T-shirts and sweatshirts are available to purchase until March 31st. Check out our popular 2-sided face masks. Stay tuned for additional added merchandise coming soon!
Amazon Smile: Sign up now and Grad Night will receive 0.5% percent of what you spend on eligible Amazon orders.
Volunteer: Your time and talents help, too! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054dadaf2daaff2-grad
Thank you for considering this request and helping all 170 seniors wrap up their year with positivity!
Sincerely,
The 2021 Grad Night Committee

SLVHS Key Club Celebrates Earth Month
SLVHS Key Club came up with several ideas on how to celebrate Earth Day this month.
The idea is that instead of a single event we will showcase different ways that people are helping the environment, and the guide found at the link below outlines a bunch of ways (and reasons) to do so.
Attention Boys Interested in Playing Golf:
The first practice will be on April 6th at 4:00pm at Delaveaga Golf Course. The team is still actively recruiting players. Please email coach Dave Crandall at [email protected] if you have any questions.
The DragonFlyMax forms must be completed prior to your first in-person activity. They can be found under the 2020-2021 requirements on a mobile device or on your computer. The three forms you have to fill out are:
- Electronic Signature Agreement
- Athlete/Parent Guide Acknowledgement
- Notice of Parent Responsibilities and Voluntary Waiver
You must do all three of those forms or you can't participate in in-person activities. Please get them done ASAP. Sign-up directions for DragonFlyMax are attached. All the remaining DragonFlyMax forms must be done before April 12th with the exception of the PPE Physical. The PPE Physical must be completed before the first competition which is tentatively scheduled for 4/20/21. A generic copy you can take to your doctor is also attached. We have recently learned that you can get PPE Physicals done for $40.00 at Doctors on Duty on Ocean St. in Santa Cruz on a walk-in basis.
Also, you must download the rSchoolToday mobile health screening app Activity Scheduler and remember to answer the screening questions before you come to any in-person activity. Link to a video on how to do that is below. REMEMBER TO USE YOUR SCHOOL EMAIL TO LOGIN WITH!

Please email Mr. Coulson if you have any questions about the DragonFlyMax paperwork or the health screening app.
Attention Boys Interested in Playing Tennis:
The first practice will be on Monday, April 12th at 1:00pm at the SLVHS tennis courts. Please email coach Matt O'Brien at [email protected] if you have any questions.

ATTENTION BOYS INTERESTED IN PLAYING SOCCER FOR SLVHS:
Soccer season is starting! First practice will be on Monday, April 5th at 10:00am on the SLVHS turf field. If you are busy over Spring Break and can't make it to the first practice that's okay. Please email coach Memo Cardenas and let him know you want to play. [email protected]
