NO SCHOOL MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH
LABOR DAY WEEKEND

Principal’s Message
from Jeff Calden
No School on Monday, September 5th - Labor Day Weekend
The schedule for the week is No School / O / E / O / E

Wednesday morning at SLVHS
I spent Wednesday morning going into nearly every classroom on campus to get a feel for what's going on right now at SLVHS.
I saw our teachers teaching and our students learning. I saw reading, writing, and arithmetic... and swimming and clay pots spinning.
I saw mathematicians explaining convex diagonals, polynomials, radicals, and exponential, linear, and quadratic equations. I saw writers and researchers working on papers and projects on Native tribes, political beliefs and behaviors, storytelling, the privacy of online content, the elements of design, and the concept of selflessness. I saw builders planning to create solar ovens and redwood boxes. I saw scientists predicting the time and rate of freefall velocity, creating models of biomes for deserts and estuaries, and a live simulation of predator/prey behavior. I watched a competition to name the numbers 1-10 in French, and a quiz show on vocabulary in Spanish. I saw all of this before lunchtime at SLVHS on a Wednesday.
I am lucky to work here. And our children are fortunate to have this wide variety of opportunities to think and learn and do.
Have a great weekend,
JC

SLV High School Students Awarded with Academic Honors from College Board National Recognition Programs
Congratulations to nine SLVHS students who excelled in College Board assessments and schoolwork to earn National Recognition Awards. Christina Hausmann, Grace Shipp, Jamie Mclean, Jordan Swan, Joshua Gabrielson, Madalynn Hein, Mary Calden, Sebastian Yannone, and Spencer Sullivan were awarded National Recognition for rural and small-town students. This academic honor can be included on college and scholarship applications and connect students with universities across the country, helping them meaningfully connect to colleges and to stand out during admissions. We are so proud of our Cougars for their hard work and efforts that have culminated in earning themselves and SLVHS national recognition.

Last year's CAASPP Scores for this Year's Senior Class of 2023 are Now Available
Last spring, Juniors took the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for English Language Arts, Math, and Science. These tests are only one indicator and are combined with other measures like report card grades, classroom work, and teacher observations to give families and teachers a more complete picture of each student's learning. These results help to identify where one is doing well and where one might need more support.
You can access your score report through the PowerSchool parent portal by clicking "Score Reports" and selecting 2021-22 from the dropdown menu.
You will receive a letter next week with directions on accessing PowerSchool. The letter will contain your individual access codes and where to reach out if you need help.
Your score report provides information about how well they met the expectations of the grade level.
This information is helpful for teachers to understand how they can better support students in the classroom, as well as how families can support their learning at home.
To learn more about your scores, go to the Starting Smarter website at https://ca.startingsmarter.org/
There, you will find information about test results, sample test questions, and free resources to support learning.

You Must Sign Your Student Out of School in the Administrative Office ANY and EVERY Time You Take Them Out of School
If your student is ill or needs to leave campus, you must have them sign out in the administration office prior to leaving campus at all times.
Please do not tell your student to meet you in the parking lot. We then have no idea where they are and are reporting them as missing.
We need to know where your student is during school hours.
If you send your student with a note in the morning and bring it to Ellen in the Administration Office, she will write a pass for the time of pickup and give it to your student.
Then they can show the teacher the pass and walk directly out to your car and we know your student is safe with you and not missing.
Thanks

4.0 Grade Scale Information
Our teachers have a choice of using the traditional 100 point grade scale with a 50% floor or using the 4.0 grade scale.
The 4.0 grade scale is similar grade-point averages. For those unfamiliar with this scale, I have attached a conversion chart to this email.
This chart can show you what the numbers in the 4.0 scale correspond to in the more familiar 100-point grade scale.

SLVHS Student Learning Outcome (SLO) of the Month
Act as a Caretaker of the Environment
- Each month we will be featuring one of our Student Learning Outcomes (SLO's) and this month's SLO is Act as a Caretaker of the Environment!
- New Trash Cans! Starting this year we will have trash cans for Recycle, Compost (Food Waste) and Landfill.
- To celebrate this SLO, take a moment to learn about what each can's purpose is for:
- Compost: Food scraps, soiled paper, & yard trimmings go in the compost cart – this includes anything from coffee grounds and napkins, to spoiled foods and peels.
- Recycle: Paper, cardboard, glass bottles, aluminum/tin cans, hard plastics, bundled plastic bags & thin (film) plastics
- Landfill: Chip & Candy Bar wrappers / bags, pens and pencils, Plastic items mixed with metal or rubber. This should be your -last- option as most things you will throw away at school can be recycled and composted!
- For more information, check out this helpful resource
- To help with how to figure out what goes where, the University of San Francisco students developed a fun game that can be found here!
