Diversity Center Youth Presentations for Freshmen on Monday, October 7th

This Monday, October 7th, all Freshman PE classes will have a presentation in our HS Multi-Purpose Room from the Diversity Center Youth Program of Santa Cruz County. The topics covered in these presentations include an introduction to gender diversity, supporting friends and peers, as well as resources in the community. Working in collaboration with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education, these presentations were well-received by students and parents at SLV High School last year.

If you do not wish for your freshman student to participate in this presentation/discussion, please email me to let Mr. Calden know at [email protected] and your child will not participate.

Climate Change Writing Done by Students of SLVHS

Our first pieces of student writing on the issue of Climate Change are attached to this email.

Please take the time to read them, as our students put forth the effort to write about an issue in which they are deeply invested.

Thank you.

Cougar Club

Please Support SLVHS Educational Programs

Thanks to the several parents who already donated to the Cougar Club donation drive. We are pleased that we have already raised $2125 in donations, which has been matched by a couple of anonymous donors so we have raised $4250 thus far. We need support from more families to meet our $12,000 fundraising goal. Donations of any amount are appreciated. All the money goes to career, college, and educational enrichment programs that benefit your children, as well as classroom equipment requested by teachers.

It’s easy and tax-deductible. The SLVHS Cougar Club now has non-profit status so you can donate via Paypal or Venmo to [email protected]. You can also make a donation via check or cash to the “Cougar Club” this can be mailed to the school (7105 Highway 9, Felton 95018) or dropped off at the office; if you donate this way then we don’t pay 2.5% in fees to Paypal or Venmo. Parent support and donations are what allow the Cougar Club to continue to provide programs and services to help ensure the success of our students, our teachers and our school.

slv athletic boosters

SLVHS Athletic Boosters Needs to add Core Members for Bingo

SLVHS Athletic Boosters raises a tremendous amount of money for our students each year by hosting and working Bingo one night week at the Portuguese Hall in Santa Cruz.  That money is a major reason our sports are free for students, unlike the pay-to-play models at all other high schools in our area.

If you are interested in helping you can contact the Boosters at [email protected].

Volunteering also gives money directly to the sport of your choice at SLVHS

Check In Check Out

Parents: Students Leaving Campus for Appointments Must Check Out and Check Back in Through the Office. Just a reminder, if your student needs to leave campus during school hours; for any reason they must come to the administration office and get an Early Release Pass.

If the student has a note to excuse him/her early they can come and get a pass to leave at designated time.

If the student does not have written permission we can call home and get permission.

You may call Ellen at 335-4425 ext. 204 if you have a situation that comes up and you need your student immediately.

Your attention to this is greatly appreciated.

From Bell to bell there is no cell

No Cell Phone Use During Class Periods

Not in the Classroom. Not in the Halls. Not in Your Car. Not in a Tree. Turn it Off and Let it Be

The SLVHS cell phone policy is to have phones powered down and in backpacks at all times except for brunch and lunch. Many students are using their phones in classrooms and in the hallways.

If administrators or campus supervisors see a student using a phone during instructional time, it will result in the phone being immediately confiscated and brought to the Administrative Office. Students can pick up their phones at the end of the day. Repetitive cell confiscations will warrant greater consequences. Thank you for supporting your child's learning.

Families: please do not text or call your child during the school day. If there is an emergency or you need to get a message to your child, please call the office and we will get that message to the student or bring that student up to call you. This method has worked for over 100 years and still works today. In fact, it is more reliable than a text. Thank you for working with us to make class time more productive and less stressful for students.

scent free zone

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we begin to have our drama performances and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. SLVHS has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.

Community

The Community Opportunity Link is provided as a courtesy for parents and students by the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District to receive information of current local events and other student opportunities. These opportunities range from scouting, sports, arts/drama, local community events, as well as other parent resources.

In an effort to reduce paper, flyers will not be sent home to students; all approved flyers will be posted to this District-created website.
