Principal’s Message
from Jeff Calden
Before I get to a whole lot of information about opening SLV High School for the 2020 school year, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the heroes who saved our Valley. The first responders, firefighters, law enforcement, community members, strangers from other cities and towns, people born and raised here who rushed back from somewhere else to help, everyone who pitched in however they could to push back against that fire.
My heart goes out to those who lost their homes. Just know that the rest of us are here for you and we have your backs. Some of the people who put it all on the line for us are people that I grew up with here in the Valley. Some of them are grown men and women who I used to coach or teach at SLV High School. Some are recent graduates of SLVHS. Some of them I have never met and never will. Thank you all for giving all you had. You truly made a difference in the lives of those who call this place home. Thank You!
School Opening: Take Two

Next Week: September 7th - September 11th

Tuesday, September 8th - Friday, September 11th will be Voluntary student class sessions on an O/E/O/E schedule
We will use our regular 8:30 - 12:30 morning schedule (Zero Period meets as well).
I have attached that schedule to this email. During this week you will go to each of your classes two times during the 75 minute morning sessions. It is important to know that these are voluntary sessions for students. We will not be taking roll nor will any assignments be given. Actual classes will start on September 14th. These sessions are a chance for teachers and students to connect, check- in, and preview the course. Teachers have either emailed or sent schoology messages with specific zoom links for these sessions.
We realize that not everyone will have the ability to access these sessions. But if you can access, please do. If you can't access these sessions, we understand. Please continue to contact your counselors or myself to let us know if you and your family are in a situation where you cannot access distance learning. We want to know this so that we can work with you to figure out a plan for how you can access school.

First Week of Actual Classes and Lessons: September 14th - 18th
We will run an A/O/E/O/E Schedule for the first week of actual school
This week - we start school for real. We will have a Monday A day with No Monday Special and no Homeroom this first week. The first Monday Special day is September 21st.
Teachers will take attendance and proceed forward with as normal a beginning to school as possible. Please note that Attendance is Extremely Important this Year - especially at the start. We will be using your attendance to create a list of students not accessing so that we can do everything we can to support them and get them involved with school.
I know this is a lot of information, but I also know that school is going to go from zero to fully-functional in the next 10 days. And I want everyone to have all the information they need to make that happen. Remember, perfection is currently out the window. But I know we all will be giving our very best to make this work. Change will happen, and that's okay.
Everyone's situation is different. Each family, each student, each one of us. But we will get through this together.

Grades are real this year. There are no hold-harmless grades from live school to fall back upon. Students will need to attend class regularly and keep up with the work in order to pass. As this is the start of a new year, work done during whatever time we are in Distance Learning will count toward your final grade, which counts toward the credits you earn, which counts toward reaching the 220 credits needed to graduate. In short, this year everything counts when it comes to assignments and grades. If we are able to start live events in December such as Fall Sports and drama productions, Semester One final grades will be used for eligibility.
Immunizations
Greetings SLVUSD Families,
I hope this message finds you well and you are enjoying these last days of summer. CDPH (California Department of Public Health) is closely monitoring immunization rates during this pandemic. All immunization requirements for admission to schools in California for the 2020-2021 school year remain in effect. Please ensure that your child's immunizations are up to date and that your school site has complete immunization records.
Please contact our district nurse, Sarah Dahlen ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns. Shots for school is an excellent website for frequently asked questions on immunizations. https://www.shotsforschool.org/. Here is the link to guide for immunizations needed for K-12 grade

Attendance
The state of California is requiring all schools to take attendance each day.
Teachers will be taking attendance in Powerschool every period, every day.
We will also have our 1st period classes meet for a short time on Monday mornings to take attendance and go over important announcements and/or information.
Accessing class each period, each day is the first way for students to be successful.
