No School Next Wednesday - Veterans Day

Online E Day on Monday

Principal’s Message

from Jeff Calden

next week

Next Week is a Very Different Schedule

Due to the Veterans Day Holiday observed next Wednesday, November 11th, there will be NO SCHOOL on Wednesday, November 11th.

This mid-week holiday creates a very different schedule for next week.

To accommodate this Holiday, we simply moved Wednesday's E Day to Monday, with no School on Wednesday.

These are three pieces that are different from our normal Distance Learning Schedule:

  1. ONLINE CLASSES WILL MEET FROM 8:30 AM TO 12:35 PM ON MONDAY!

Instead of Monday Specials, there will be an E Day on Monday.  This E Day replaces the one we will not have on the Wednesday Holiday.

Students will go to their 2nd, 4th, and 6th period classes on MONDAY!  No Monday Specials Next Week.

  1. The entire week looks like this:   Mon: E day / Tues: O Day / Wed NO SCHOOL / Thurs O Day / Fri E Day.

We simply moved Wednesday's E Day to Monday. Then NO SCHOOL on WEDNESDAY. This keeps the other three days with classes on the days they normally meet.

Notice that the week goes EO no school then OE.  Two O days in a row.

  1. There will NOTbe Afternoon Support Classes on Tuesday or Thursday next week.  This is time for students to get caught up on makeup work as we get

closer to the end of the semester.

Remember:  E / O / No School /O / E

SLVHS Cougar Club; Enriching the educational experience

I would like to extend a huge thank you to the Cougar Club for running the online Fundraiser for our high school families and staff who lost their homes in the fire.

And another huge thank you to our community for stepping up and giving to those in need.  Over $12,000 was raised for 22 families and 2 staff members who lost their homes.

Due to all involved, we are able to give each family over $500.  I am always amazed, but never surprised, at the way the people of the San Lorenzo Valley support our friends and neighbors in times of need. I am so proud to live and work here.

grades

Progress Reports will be Mailed Home. Expect them sometime Next Week

While families can check grades at any time on Schoology, we feel it is important in this strange start to a school year that we mail a hard copy home.

We will also include a Notice of Possible Fail letter for any student with one or more grades of F.  This is always done on the last Progress Report before a semester grade.

As our semester has been shortened, this will be the only progress report of this shortened first semester, as we are already halfway through.

Because of the nature of this school year, this first grading period will not establish eligibility for extracurricular activities such as Drama or Athletics.

The semester grade in December will determine eligibility for any extracurricular activities taking place after we return from Winter Break.

The Progress Report and Notice of Possible Fail letter should be a wakeup call for many students who have not been regularly attending classes or completing assignments.

The final grades in December count as your 1st semester grades for this school year. Classes not passed must be made up in order to graduate. The good news is that you have plenty of time to get your grades where they need be. And you have time after lunch in the afternoon blocks to work with your teachers to help you do that. And you have time on Mondays and on Friday afternoons to get work done. If you are getting invitations to come to afternoon block support, it means your teacher is concerned about your grade. If you aren't going, you are wasting an opportunity to avoid a tremendous amount of work in your future when you have to repeat the entire class - or several classes - in summer school and/or during the school year.

We know this has been a strange and incredibly difficult start to a school year. For some, much harder than others. But it's time to get to work. Do everything you can the next six weeks to finish up the semester with the grades you want and/or need.

Ask for help. Your teachers are there for you. As are your counselors. And your administrators.

There are a lot of people in your corner who will help you get this done. You just have to be one of them.

teacher afternoon support

Afternoon Support Blocks Are Up and Running: Need Help with School? Your Teachers are Here for You!

Our online Afternoon Support Blocks, run by our high school teachers, meet each week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Teachers will assign students who can then get support during the school day. Students can also email teachers to request time to meet for help.

Teachers will be sending email invitations out to assign afternoon class support sessions.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to work with their own teachers to get support.

A reminder that School is actually in session each day from 8:30 to 3:00 pm.

We waited until the first month of classes were complete to begin our afternoon support schedule.

Afternoon blocks will only run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 1:15 to 2:00 pm and 2:15 to 3:00 pm

Monday Special Schedule will still run on Mondays and students will still have Friday afternoons free.

Detailed information below.

This time is set aside DURING THE SCHOOL DAY for teachers to be able to work with small groups of students who need support in that teacher's class.

When needed, students will be assigned to come to one or more afternoon support blocks each week.  Some days or weeks, students may not be assigned any sessions, but may still contact a teacher to schedule a drop-in time if they have questions or need some help. These blocks are an extension of a student's time in that teacher's class.  If needed, it is part of that class and whether or not you show up could affect your grade positively or negatively.

every day counts!

Attendance

The state of California is requiring all schools to take attendance each day.

Teachers will be taking attendance in Powerschool every period, every day.

We will also have our 1st period classes meet for a short time on Monday mornings in a Monday Homeroom Class to take attendance and go over important announcements and/or information.  Accessing class each period, each day is the first way for students to be successful.
