Principal’s Message from Jeff Calden

If it's on the Internet

Students - Your School Google Account is NOT PRIVATE!!!!!

While all of you should know this already because you have been told several times, your School Google Account is NOT PRIVATE!

It belongs to the school district.  I can't just go into your account and read your email or look at what's on your Drive.

I can only see your emails when you invite me in with profanity and/or other trigger words flagged by the server.

When your school emails are flagged, that email goes immediately to school administration - myself and Mrs. Winters.  And any subsequent emails on that thread also come to us automatically.  Rarely are these emails actually cyberbullying or students who need help in some way.  If they are, we deal with them and that is why the server flags these emails.  If they aren't, I usually just delete them.

Most often they are Google Drive projects you are sharing with peers that are titled something like, "Poetry  s*#t  for Poetzinger's class,"  or an email to a friend that has what I would call casual profanity in it.  Needless to say, I get enough emails already without having to delete these, or drop a little hint to you that you are emailing the principal as well.  The worst for me and the students are 243 email chains between two sophomores in love going back and forth online for hours.  Not only am I inconvenienced, but it's quite embarrassing for them when I chime in with "For God's sake, say goodnight and go to bed!"  Parents - this is also a good reminder why cell phones should be on the charger in the kitchen at night.  Anyway, I just want to make everyone aware again of how this system works.  And it's also good to remember that NOTHING you put online is ever really private.

Cougar Parents

Do your holiday shopping using the Benefit App and support SLVHS Educational Activities

Please support college, career, and enrichment activities for all kids at SLVHS using the Benefit Mobile App. It’s like using escrip but for lots of businesses. You can use it to purchase items from over 200 retailers such as Amazon, eBay, Kmart, CVS, Safeway, Home Depot, AirBnB airlines and more (see www.benefit-mobile.com/our-retailers for a full list) and they will donate 2-10% of your purchase to the SLV High School Cougar Club. Last year the Cougar Parent Club made $250 with only five people using it. We could make so much more if more people would sign up. It just takes a couple of quick steps to get started:

  1. Download the Benefit app.
  2. Select SLV High School Cougar Club as your beneficiary
  3. Link your bank account (we get a higher percentage or your purchase) or credit card.
  4. Then you purchase gift cards for the amount of your choice for any of the retailers on the list and use those to make your purchases.

This a great way to support SLVHS educational programs without having to spend any additional money. Email [email protected] if you have any questions about it or problems enrolling.

SAT Prep Workshop January

The Cougar Club is sponsoring an SAT prep workshop Saturday January 26, from 9 am-1 pm. Sign-ups will open on Monday.

Scent Free Zone

This is a reminder that San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District policy, as set by the Board of Trustees, declares that we are a fragrant-neutral district. As we begin to have our drama performances and other site-based activities and meetings, please take care to follow the policies below for the sake of the students and members of our community who are highly allergic to fragrances and scents.

The SLVUSD Board of Trustees adopted a California School Board Association policy to make all district classrooms and offices fragrant neutral. SLVHS has parents, students, and community members with respiratory issues who can have negative reactions to fragrances. Please take care to follow the policy while on campus.

Staff and students shall refrain from bringing furred or feathered animals, stuffed toys that may collect dust mites, scented candles, incense or air fresheners and from using perfume or cologne, scented hair spray, nail polish or nail polish remover that are not fragrance-free in classrooms or other enclosed areas or buildings.
